The contrast that can be given is thus slightly more than is needed, yet the patient had additional risk factors in the form of diabetes and probable anemia, and the low GFR was probably because he was dehydrated from the diarrhea. It is therefore appropriate to treat this risk factor by rehydrating the him before the exam if time allows. In an emergency, the patient may need surgery without a prior CT.
