Planning

Posteroanterior, oblique, lateral and angled posteroanterior projections.[1]

Detection

Even if there's an initial obvious fracture, evaluate:

  • Bone contours for disruptions
  • Bone areas for unusual lines that are either hypoattenuating (in case of separation) or hyperattenuating (in case of compression)

Classification

Types of fracture misalignment:[2]
  • Displacement
  • Angulation
  • Distraction (making bone longer)
  • Impaction or shortening
  • Rotation

Report

When reporting to non-orthopedic doctors who may not know about the limitations of X-ray, emphasize this in the absence of findings, such as:

No visible fracture as far as can be seen by plain radiography.
