Planning
Choice of modality
- X-ray of Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease is the primary modality in suspected or known LCP.[1]
- MRI of Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease can confidently diagnose the condition in case of normal or equivocal X-rays.[1]
Evaluation
Early signs:[2]
- Smaller femoral epiphyseal size
- Increased radiodensity of the femoral head epiphysis
- Blurring of the epiphyseal plate
- Radiolucency of the proximal metaphysis
- Joint effusion, seen as widening of the medial joint space (unspecific sign)
Late signs:[2]
- Fragmentation of the femoral head
- Subchondral lucency (crescent sign)
- Thickening of some trabeculae of the proximal femur
- Increased width of the femoral neck (coxa magna)
