Choice of modality

X-ray of fractures of the lumbar spine is the modality of choice in:

Low clinical suspicion of a fracture.^[1]
Suspicion of a vertebral compression fracture alone.
In children. CT or MRI is indicated in children if there are neurological signs.^[2]

Otherwise, CT of the lumbar spine in trauma is generally the first choice.
